As a child, Tang Muli showed exceptional talent as a painter, but like many artists of his generation, the opportunity to pursue formal art training was interrupted by the Cultural Revolution, when he was sent to the countryside for re-education. During this time, he was assigned to work at a dairy farm commune outside Shanghai, and in the evenings, after his work was completed, he was allowed to paint. This small work was once part of a much larger painting depicting Chairman Mao inspecting Shanghai Forward Farm. Here, the two youthful workers admire Mao while basking in the bright sunshine that comes from the direction of the Chairman.
