Soldier
China, 2nd or 1st century BC
This sculpture was placed in an ancient Chinese tomb, or underground grave, in order to protect the person who had died. People believed that a human’s soul lived on in the afterlife and would need materials and support from other people in order to be happy for eternity. Tomb objects like this are known as mingqi and are usually made out of clay. This soldier once held a weapon. Can you find the place where the missing weapon once was? Why do you think the weapon has disappeared?
