Wu Changshi was a leading painter in Shanghai and teacher of Qi Baishi. Greatly admired for his vigorous and expressive brushwork, bold colors and striking compositions, Wu¿s work captures both the spirit of individualistic painters of the seventeenth century and the excitement of the modern movement beginning at this time in Shanghai.Osmanthus (or cassia) produces fragrant blossoms around the time of the Autumn Moon Festival, and is associated with the rabbit on the moon who pounds the elixir of immortality. It also represents success in the civil service examinations: according to legend, the moon goddess Chang-E presents a sprig of cassia to candidates who achieve the highest level.
