Compelled to draw for the first time in 1962, Joseph Yoakum created hundreds of sketches like this one during the last decade of his life. Working from memory (real, imagined, or embellished), he described his process as a “spiritual unfoldment.” As seen here, Yoakum typically inscribed his landscapes with the name—and sometimes a description—of the place depicted. The date stamp constitutes another Yoakum trademark.
