Adriaen van Ostade, who apparently studied with Frans Hals, was one of the foremost exponents of peasant genre painting in the city of Haarlem, just west of Amsterdam. The grinding poverty, intense emotions and poses of the figures, and the dramatic contrasts of light and shadow here are all characteristic of Ostade’s work in the 1630s, when he was in his twenties. Unlike many other Dutch artists who specialized in depictions of peasants, he is fully aware of the effects of poverty on his subjects.
