Setsuzan is recorded as a pupil of Sesson (1504-1598), the great Ashikaga master of suiboku (ink landscapes) This painting reflects much of Sesson’s style on a much smaller scale. The ultimate source for the monochromatic landscape style was Chinese painting of the Southern Song period (1127-1279).
