This self-portrait in a leather flying suit was made in February 1943; it appeared on the first page of the March 1, 1943, article “LIFE’s Bourke-White Goes Bombing.” Bourke-White later commented, perhaps just a little self-servingly, that she was flattered that her picture became as popular as a pin-up.
