Terminal Tower, an office building located above the new Cleveland Union Station, became one of Bourke-White’s signature images, capturing the glamorous allure of the skyscraper era. The Van Sweringen brothers, reclusive tycoons known locally as “the Vans,” developed the Tower to integrate the train and streetcar system servicing the city’s new suburbs—including the one “the Vans” built, Shaker Heights. Bourke-White photographed the Tower in all weathers, at different times of day, and framed by trestles and bridges to highlight its powerful modernity.
