Emotive and expressive in his art and personality, Munakata Shiko produced bold works with brush and ink, as well as through woodblock prints. Severely near-sighted, he worked close to the surface when wielding the brush or carving a woodblock. The word mu represents the important Buddhist principle of nothingness and was one of Munakata’s favorite words to write. In his life and art, Munakata seemed to tap into an awakened consciousness beyond self that this concept embodies.
