Lempad’s ink sketch is taken from a longer narrative, “The Journey of Dukuh Siladri,” in which Siladri and his wife travel in the forest carrying the infant, Kusumasari. After being caught in a rainstorm, Siladri’s wife Kadek grows ill and dies. Siladri is grief-stricken and continues to carry her dead body, tears streaming down his face, while trying to also hold the child. As is his style, Lempad elongates the body of Siladri, who is carrying his beloved wife, thereby calling on the viewer’s compassion.
