Drawing both from his work experience in a ceramic kiln factory in China’s Hebei province, as well as his training at the Central Technology Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, Suo Tan thwarts viewers’ expectations with humor. Here, the artist has taken the ubiquitous portrait of Mao and subverted its solemnity by glazing it as though it were a twelfth- or thirteenth-century ware from the Cizhou kilns, known for high-quality, imaginative folk ceramics.
