Buck is best known for his large, colorful woodcuts, usually with a central dominant figure set against a background of simultaneous complex narratives. In The Yarn this background is almost apocalyptic, with trumpeting figures, a medieval castle, an ark presumably filled with pairs of animals, an erupting volcano, and a whale swallowing Jonah as the figure, made of yarn, unravels. The use of the stark woodcut medium combined with the limited palette of deepest black, set against fiery orange, red, and yellow, assaults the eyes with its ferocity.
