Inscribed :Towards another land, a country where only light reigns. After completing his calligraphic studies in Baghdad, Massoudy left for France in 1969; there he continued his education at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Influenced by French modern artists as well as by the great Arabic masters, he soon freed himself from the strict rules of classical calligraphy and found his own individual artistic expression. For Massoudy, each work of calligraphy conceals a picture, and he transmits that through his use of color and by emphasizing one large written character, here the word noor, meaning light. In explaining his art, he has said, “The gestures of the calligrapher become an open space, welcoming the words of the poet and the imagination of the onlooker.”
