Hsia I-fu gained fame for his art rather late in life. Born in Shandong, he had early training in traditional Chinese painting as well as drawing and watercolor techniques. As a recognition of this talent he was accepted into the Hangzhou Art Academy in 1947, but China’s civil war prevented him from pursuing his studies. In 1949 he moved to Taiwan and spent many years doing design-related jobs. Not until his retirement in 1978 did he return to practicing Chinese painting. His first solo exhibition was held at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in 1988, and he enjoyed great success as a painter following that show. Hsia’s distinctive, refined brushwork, built up in layers on the painting surface, creates landscapes that are rooted in traditional Chinese art but are inspired by Taiwan’s lush mountains.
