This is a centerpiece of a triptych. Kannon, the bodhisattva of Compassion, is seated in a relaxed position in front of a halo within a landscape of overhanging branches and waves. With a serene expression and eyes downcast, she holds a stalk of lotus flower with one hand. A single branch of bamboo in a vase is set on a rock next to her. She is dressed in a hooded-robe in white, with modest adornments. This Japanese painting is set as the main image, flanked by a pair of Japanese landscape paintings of typical Chinese literati subjects.
