Born in Niigata, Yako Hodo learned to work with bamboo at vocational school and at the age of sixteen began a four-year apprenticeship with Nakajima Hoso. He later studied in Tokyo with Nakamura Yukosai and Baba Shodo. Yako Hodo has won numerous awards for his techniques and his works have been accepted in Nitten and Japanese Traditional Craft Arts exhibitions. Many of his sculptures evoke the urban environment and architectural forms of the Tokyo area. He makes rough sketches to conceptualize his pieces and spends more time preparing the bamboo than weaving it. “Sometimes I have to make adjustments in the middle of weaving. When I have a hard time finding out what adjustments to make, I try listening to the bamboo and asking it what I should do.”
