Maeda Chikubosai I was a self-taught artist and worked for some time with Tanabe Chikuunsai I, making baskets for export. Chikubosai I gained renown for baskets he made for the imperial household and is considered one of the great masters of basket art in the Taisho period. He often used kanchiku bamboo in combination with its roots, as seen here.
