Springtime Song is illustrated in William Schack’s 1939 biography of Eilshemius, And he sat among the ashes—a book about a Cornellian, written by a Cornellian. Eilshemius studied agriculture at Cornell from 1882 to 1884. Schack graduated in 1918, followed by his wife, Sarah, a year later. The Schacks donated several works by Eilshemius to the Johnson Museum, but not Springtime Song. At the time Ashes was published, Springtime Song was in the collection of Boyer Galleries in New York City. Sometime later, it was acquired by another biographer of artists, B. H. Friedman, Class of 1948. Friedman and his wife, Abby, bequeathed the watercolor to the Johnson in 2011.
