Clemente, a leading contemporary printmaker and artist, is known for his ability to combine influences from his global life lived partially in his native Italy, partially in the Madras region of India, and partially in New York City. This print attests to his ability to combine and transmute techniques from across the world. Air is a complex woodcut fabricated to look like a watercolor and inspired by ukiyo-e. Clemente produces different blocks and cuts and inks them differently, layering one on top of the other to produce this surreal image. (“Imprint/ In Print,” curated by Nancy E. Green with assistance from Christian Waibel ’17 and presented at the Johnson Museum August 8 – December 20, 2015)
