The sculpture #71 is an example of Ashkin’s well-known miniature scale models from the 1990s, which depict marginalized landscapes such as mines, oil fields, and industrial wastelands that often surround our urban environments. It also depicts issues related to social, economic, and political exclusion and abandonment. (“The City: Works from the Collection,” cocurated by Andrea Inselmann and Sonja Gandert and presented at the Johnson Museum September 5 – December 20, 2015)
