The work of Nguy?n Ð?c Dung is characterized by strong contrasts between light and dark, a relationship mediated by his expressive treatment of Nôm characters. Perhaps the most representational work in this group, the character is accompanied by an image of bamboo leaves rendered in sweeping brushstrokes. Upon closer inspection, the stark presence of black ink against pale background is complicated by the fine flecks of gold leaf embedded in the paper fiber, animating the surface of the paper as it catches the light.
