While architect Richard David Chalfant was living in Japan in 1956 and designing the renovation of the Officers Club at Osan-Ni in Korea, he met dealer Akio Saito. After returning to the architectural firm Perkins & Will in Chicago, he and his wife Joan worked with Saito to import Japanese art that they could sell to augment their income. In 1964, 1998, and 2008 they donated works from their collection to the Johnson Museum. This ceramic vase by Esaki Issei is one of two pieces by the artist that the Chalfants gave to the Museum, both dating to the early 1960s. (“American Sojourns and the Collecting of Japanese Art,” curated by Ellen Avril and presented at the Johnson Museum June 25–December 18, 2016)
