Ider-ider are wrapped around the eaves of a shrine, so they are not typically intended to be read from left to right. At center of this cloth, Bhoma (Kala) the god of time, a large masklike head with hands, would be positioned at the center of the shrine where offerings would be placed. Then the viewer would read to the left and to the right simultaneously. As exhibited here, the scenes of this cloth can more easily be read from left to right:The golden deer races away, as Rama tries to shoot her. Ravana abducts Sita. Hanuman, the Great White Monkey, has secretly arrived in Lanka, finds Sita and shows her Rama’s ring, to identify himself as a friend. The clowns Twalen (in black) and Mredah (in red)In the center is Bhoma (Kala) who guards the temple Hanuman brings Sita’s ring to Rama.Clowns, in brown and green, probably Delem and SangutHanuman threatens a demoness, probably Lankini, with a weapon. She tries to block his way to Lanka, but he shrinks, enters her mouth and then grows inside, causing her immense pain and forcing her to let him pass.
