The face towers of the twelfth-thirteenth century Bayon temple in the Angkor temple complex have been popularly interpreted as portraits of King Jayavarman VII, considered one of the great monarchs of the Khmer Empire. Jayavarma VII was responsible for major construction programs of public works and monuments, and also for the transition to Buddhism as the state religion. As such, the faces of the Bayon towers bear likeness to the refined Buddha images characteristic of Bayon-period sculpture.
