Greenbaum’s seemingly improvisational painting brings the viewer into a labyrinth of shapes and bright colors where paint is employed in highly graphic ways. Pigment spins furiously to create moving disks and then branches out into an intricate series of grids that weave in and out of each other across the canvas. The overall effect is joyous and chaotic suggesting doodlelike abstractions conceived on a monumental scale. (“Highlights from the Collection: 45 Years at the Johnson,” curated by Stephanie Wiles and presented at the Johnson Museum January 27–July 22, 2018)
