The farm building depicted here is of the wooden langhuis (long-house) type favored by dairy farmers and cattle breeders, in which the cattle would be penned in under the same roof as their owners. The livelihood of the family, whose two children stand in the doorway, is shown by the milk bucket and yoke drying on the wagon wheel at left. Behind the house, we see a haystack with its thatched cover that descends on poles as the hay is used. Given his fondness for capturing the details of everyday life, Rembrandt could not resist including the family pet partially hidden above the doorway.
