Chun Kyung-ja was a painter and writer born in Korea during the Japanese Occupation Period (1910–45). In 1940, she moved to Japan to study at Tokyo Women’s University of Art and graduated in 1944. She trained in both traditional East Asian painting as well as Western painting style. Chun’s art is often filled with vivid colors, as she experimented with Korean motifs and styles. On this album page, she used brush to delineate lively goldfish swimming every which way. A hint of blue was dabbed in the background to indicate water. Her name, Kyung-ja, is signed on the right in running script, and accompanied by her stamp with the character kyung. In East Asia, goldfish are considered auspicious, bringing good fortune and harmony.
