Toko was a priest-painter whose brushwork is reminiscent of paintings by Niten (1584-1645), the most famous of the later exponents of the Zen-inspired suiboku (:ink-wash”) style. The strongly asymmetrical composition of this painting reflects the influence of Chinese Southern Song painting.
