The Obaku Zen monk Hyakusetsu Genyo founded Kyoto’s Hozoji temple. His accomplishments in poetry, painting and tea ceremony, as well as his study of Zen Buddhism, gained him respect in both religious and aristocratic circles. His calligraphy style features strong contrasts between wet and dry brushstrokes.
