Chief pupil of the Daitoku-ji abbot, Takuan (1573-1645), Isshi was born into nobility, served as a page for the empress at the age of seven and began to study Zen at the age of twelve. His paintings are characterized by their thin, curving lines and his calligraphy was admired for its aristocratic sensibility. In the tradition of Zenga, painting by Zen monks, forms are reduced to only the most essential lines.
