Van Meckenem’s print of the procession to Calvary from the gates of Jerusalem shows the formulaic conception of the city common to many late-medieval depictions. Various urban architectural forms—gates, towers, and spires—are visible, but the artist is not interested in scaling them with his figures, who take precedence and therefore are proportionately too large for the architecture around them.
