Born in Nagoya, Gessen joined Zojoji temple in Edo at a young age and there he learned painting from Sakurai Sekkan. Later he moved to Kyoto, where his personal style developed under the combined influences of both the realist painter Maruyama Okyo and the Nanga artist Yosa Buson. As a priest of the Jodo sect of Buddhism, Gessen’s practice of painting and poetry were deployed to raise support for the upkeep of his temple, Chion-in.In this gentle landscape, a group of scholars cross a bridge, about to make their way between large willow trees and up a steep path to visit a friend, who awaits their arrival at the gate to his mountain abode.
