This painting displays Bunrin’s interest in combining the visual realism of the Shijo school with bunjinga (literati) subject matter: the fifth-century Chinese poet Tao Yuanming. Tao Yuanming was upheld as a model of the eremitic lifestyle of a Confucian scholar who refused to serve a corrupt government. After quitting officialdom, Tao lived a carefree-life writing poetry and enjoying wine. He is sometimes called the Master of the Five Willows, after the willow trees he planted near his house.
