The Night Scenes series published by the Hasegawa Publishing Company, for which this print was produced, captures the essence of the shin hanga (New Prints) movement. Established in an effort to revive the ukiyo-e tradition, this movement looked to artists whose training combined Western watercolor techniques with nihonga (modernized Japanese painting) to supply the pictures upon which the prints would be based. Such prints appealed both to foreigners and to the growing number of Japanese travelers exploring their own nation, eager to collect souvenir pictures that captured the beauty of the Japanese landscape.
