WHERE WAS IT MADE?This teapot was manufactured by Allgemeine Eiektrizitäts-Gesellschaft (AEG), based in Germany, around 1909.WHO WAS THE ARTIST?Peter Behrens (1868-1940) was a German architect, designer, and painter. Beginning his career in painting and illustration, he moved into product design and architecture. He is best known for the work he did as a designer with the company Allgemeine Eiektrizitäts-Gesellschaft (AEG). HOW WAS IT MADE?This teapot is made of hammered nickel-plated brass and features a handle that is wrapped in rattan or wicker.WHY DOES IT LOOK LIKE THIS?Look closely at the surface of the pot to see the decorative texture in the metal. Notice the plug at the lower back of the pot, allowing the user to heat the teapot electrically. The elegant, simple geometric design of this teapot is reminiscent of the coming Art Deco movement, and is more restrained than Art Nouveau designs of the time.
