The circular tray on three feet functioned to hold offerings of food, usually fruit, placed on an altar in a Buddhist temple. The stylized design of lotus, a symbol of purity and the Buddha, is reminiscent of decoration seen in metalwork of the period. Outlines were incised in the surface to assist in containing the lead-based sancai (three-color) glazes, which had a tendency to run during firing.
