In Hindu religion, Devi, The Goddess, personifies the female principle. Her successful feats against various demons are related in the Devimahatmya section of the Markandeya Purana, a text that records the discussions between the sage Markandeya and his disciple. In this painting, Devi is shown in her manifestation as the multi-armed Ambika, who rides on her lion as she fiercely attacks Mahasura’s army of demons. Wielding a variety of weapons, this warrior form of Devi deploys her awesome power to fight the forces of evil. Above, the gods in the clouds bless the battle by showering flower petals from the heavens.
