For Diary of a Young Girl (Het Achterhuis), a fortieth-anniversary publication of Anne Frank’s diary, Goldyne traveled with his eleven-year-old daughter to Amsterdam to study the settings for his images. Rather than attempt to re-create the life the Franks lived, the artist chose to depict everyday objects that were important to Anne and her family: shoes, potatoes, a vase of flowers, her fountain pen. The format of the illustrations (and the separate suite of ten etchings) is tall and narrow, conveying the confinement of the house where eight people lived secretly for more than two years. It also emphasizes the literal point of view of its occupants in Anne’s accompanying text. (“The Art of the Book,” curated by Nancy E. Green and presented at the Johnson Museum July 6-August 4, 2019)
