Norman Daly has drawn from his exceedingly fertile imagination yet another Llhuroscian image for his print, Palimpsest Found at Houndee. Daly was the creator of the civilization of Llhuros, a mythical culture complete with painting, sculpture, music, rituals, poetry, architectural fragments, murals, scientific instruments, games, maps, jewelry, crafts, and other artifacts. An exhibition of his “discoveries” was organized at Cornell in 1972 and traveled throughout the United States and Europe. In making this print, he photographed an interesting pattern of shadows foaling on the interior of a Styrofoam packing box, transferred the photograph to a screen, and painted the foreground figures on a separate screen. Using contemporary products and print techniques, he has produced an ageless icon. Norman Daly was born in 1911 and studied fine art at the University of Colorado and Ohio State University. He studied and taught in Europe and at several American universities before becoming a professor in the Department of Art at Cornell University. He has had numerous one-man exhibitions and has participated in group shows at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and many more. He has also received many awards, prizes, and grants.
