Felice Beato, the first European to open a photography enterprise in Yokohama, trained Austrian Baron Raimund von Stillfried in his studio before von Stillfried opened his own in 1871. He operated several studios under various names, and purchased Beato’s studio in 1877. Among the baron’s most elegant images are his studio portraits of Japanese women.
