One of the most successful photographers in Yokohama, Tamamura Kozaburo opened his studio in 1883. He advertised that his photos were produced using the best chemicals, so that they would not readily deteriorate, and paid close attention to the quality of the hand-coloring. In 1896, the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper reported that Tamamura had exported some forty thousand photographs to Boston for insertion into Captain F. Brinkley’s multivolume Japan: Described and Illustrated by the Japanese. (“American Sojourns and the Collecting of Japanese Art,” curated by Ellen Avril and presented at the Johnson Museum June 25–December 18, 2016)
