Robert Frank’s image of de Kooning and his young daughter seems to suggest comfort and warmth. But their relationship, like many of de Kooning’s, was complicated by his alcoholism and fame. Lisa de Kooning has reflected that although she believes she was “the apple of his eye,” painting always came first. Here their figures could be interpreted as posed or stiff, an outward demonstration of the father-daughter bond rather than a true instance of it.
