Whistler’s brother-in-law, Seymour Haden, with whom he stayed while in London, had a large collection of etchings, many by the master of the medium, Rembrandt. His early drawings and etchings reflect how closely he poured over the originals. In the early 1860s, reviewing a show of Whistler’s paintings and etchings, Dante Gabriel Rossetti noted that in the latter, Whistler had no “superior since the days of Rembrandt.” Rossetti was not the only one to make this comparison, and a reviewer in Punch magazine echoed those words almost verbatim.
