Isadora Duncan (1877-1927) is considered to be the innovator of modern dance, creating a free-flowing style, performed barefoot. This impressionistic movement appealed to the artists of the age and several photographers, including Steichen and Genthe, photographed her many times. She died at age fifty in a freak car accident when a scarf she was wearing around her neck became entangled around one of the vehicle’s open-spoked wheels and rear axle, breaking her neck.
