A pupil of Wang Hui (1632-1717), Yang Jin and his mentor often collaborated on works, most famously the scrolls documenting the Emperor Kangxi¿s Southern Inspection Tour. By the Qing period, the orthodox ink-monochrome style had become an important hallmark of imperial court painting. One of the four noble plants, the chrysanthemum represents autumn and is also associated with the Chinese scholar, as a symbol of longevity and a life of ease in retirement.
