Photographer Lee Friedlander traveled across the United States for several projects, capturing monuments, urban scenes, and landscapes in unconventional ways. Taken from inside a truck, Idaho explores human interaction with rural American landscape. The vehicle’s mirror reflects mountains and fields of crops as it drives down a road that cuts through farm country. Like Winogrand’s Castle Rock, Colorado, Friedlander’s photograph illustrates the experience of viewing the American West through a car. -Nina Simpkins (“Shifting Ground,” curated by undergraduate members of Cornell’s History of Art Majors’ Society, with oversight by Leah Sweet and Brittany R. R. Rubin, and presented at the Johnson Museum April 21-August 12, 2018)
