Paintings of a variety of flowers, especially in the horizontal format, are sometimes referred to as baihua tu, paintings of the hundred flowers. There are not literally a hundred flowers depicted; the term is a euphemism for representing a range of all sorts of flowers. Jiang Pu belonged to a family of artists renown for their skill in painting flowers. He was one of the many court painters who served the Qianlong emperor (r. 1736-95) and the style of this painting, with its emphasis on careful observation and meticulous rendering in brilliant colors, typifies courtly taste in the eighteenth century.
