When Dove enrolled at Cornell, he began by studying law to please his father, but he was more excited by an art course he took with Charles Furlong in (of all places) the engineering school. By the time he graduated in 1903 he was passionate about art, and he moved to New York to seek commercial work. He studied in Paris in 1908–09 and was painting in the south of France in the postimpressionist style seen here that would soon be replaced by his better-known abstractions made on his return to New York.
