A member of the Fujiwara clan, Saigyo (1115-1188) renounced his imperial ties at the age of 23 to become an itinerant priest. Shown here wearing his characteristic large hat and simple monk’s robes, Saigyo returns to his palatial home after years of travelling.Busei, trained as a nanga artist under Tani Buncho (1763-1840), also painted in the Kano style, as exemplified by this fan.
