The Buddha is shown three times in this painting. Above, he sits in a palace in the Tavatimsa, Indra’s Heaven, where he is preaching to honor his deceased mother. In the center section the green-skinned Indra and two attendants escort the Buddha as he descends on a miraculous ladder supported by naga serpents. Below, a king and queen listen attentively and in reverence as the Buddha preaches in a temple.
